Happy Data Protection Day people!

data protection day

It’s Data Protection Day this Sunday, January 28, and for us data-security freaks here at NOS Apps that’s like Christmas, our all birthdays, and Computer Security Day all rolled into one. We’re always harping on about taking control of your data, and we’re happy the Council of Europe pays heed one day a year.

Your personal data is processed every second of every day, but generally speaking people don’t think twice about handing their private information to the internet for tech giants and hackers to snoop over.  There’s very much a “Who cares? I’ve nothing to hide” attitude that misses the point of data protection. The amount that data suave companies can tell about a person from their online activity can swing elections, so why should you hand that power to a faceless machine?

In 2006 the Council of Europe launched a Data Protection Day to be celebrated each year on 28 January, the date on which the Council of Europe’s data protection convention, known as “Convention 108”, was opened to signature. Data Protection Day is now celebrated globally and is called Privacy Day outside Europe.

On this date, governments, parliaments, national data protection bodies and other actors carry out activities to raise awareness about the rights to personal data protection and privacy. The data protection convention, which is the only international treaty in this field, is being updated to ensure that its data protection principles are still in line with today’s needs.

So in keeping with the theme of the day, it would be rude for us not to point out that the best way to secure your data online is to encrypt it. get2Clouds® from NOS Microsystems is an end-to-end encrypted file transfer and messenger service that offers unparalleled security in the cloud.  Download it today in celebration of Data Protection Day.
